If you've ever wanted to audition for a play, the opportunity is quickly approaching. The Stage Company has scheduled auditions for its spring production, "Enchanted April."
ABOUT THE PLAY
The play, adapted by Matthew Barber, is based on Elizabeth von Arnim's 1922 novel about four very different women who want to escape from their dismal surroundings to the warm sun and blooming wisteria of San Salvatore, Italy. Leaving husbands and societal obligations behind, unhappy housewives Lotty and Rose, the severe Mrs. Graves, and the seductive Lady Caroline rediscover laughter and learn new truths about themselves, sometimes quite comically.
"Although the play is set in 1922 England, the desires, problems and issues these women face aren't so different than what many women today still struggle with," said Cara Recine, who is directing the show.
ABOUT THE ROLES
There are roles for five women and three men. The character list is below. Ages cast will depend on auditioners.
Lotty (30s to 40s) is intent on experiencing a happier and more fulfilling; she has a bit of wild streak.
Rose (early 40s to 50s) is a housewife with a rogue husband. She yearns for something greater in her life.
Lady Caroline, (20s to 30s) is a single sophisticate looking for peace and a respite from the men who hound her constantly.
Mrs. Graves (60s to 70s) is a feisty dowager with a grand sense of herself, a biting humor and no desire to change.
Costanza (50s to 60s,) is the Italian housekeeper at the villa and doesn't suffer fools easily.
Melleresh (40s to 50s) is the frugal and stuffy husband of Lotty; he believes women should be caretakers, not adventurers.
Frederick, 40s to 50s, is the husband of Rose, a novelist seduced by fame and beautiful women, climbing the social ladder.
Wilding, 20s to 40s, is the owner of the Italian villa and a likable, a good catch who knows how to charm the ladies.
The character of Costanza speaks Italian only; Caroline and Wilding speak in both languages. Assistant Director and Italian teacher David Mendriski will coach actors, so don't worry if you don't speak Italian.
Auditions will be readings from the script, on reserve at the Carbondale Public Library.
